J. Ben Yoo (Electrical and\nComputer Engineering) wins a new team project led by MIT to demonstrate a <em>P<\/em><em>hase-change Reconfigurable\nOptical WavEfront Synthesis System<\/em>\n(<em>PROWESS<\/em>).\nPROWESS comprises metasurfaces made of phase-change materials (PCMs), where\ntheir phase transition and hence refractive index are electrothermally tuned\nvia Si micro-heaters. Switching of a large metasurface matrix is facilitated by\nintegration with Si CMOS transistor arrays.&nbsp;\nThe team will further explore two emerging applications uniquely enabled\nby PROWESS by implementing a reconfigurable optical neural network (ONN) and a\nhigh-information-density infrared imaging system. The reconfigurable ONN can\nnot only adapt to different computation tasks on-the-fly but additionally\nallows dynamic training for instance via back propagation, dramatically\nstreamlining the deep learning process. In the latter example, PROWESS enables\nreal-time collection of multi-dimensional information including light\nwavelength, polarization, and incident angle, empowering imaging systems with\nunprecedented intelligence capabilities.&nbsp;\nThe PROWESS team consists of Juejun Hu (lead PI MIT), S.J.Ben Yoo (UC\nDavis), Myungkoo Kang (U Central Florida), Tian Gu (MIT), Hualiang Zhang (UMass\nLowell) supported by NSF ASCENT program at $1.5M over three years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DoE Phase II Distinguished Professor S.
